Curious about bubble tea, but not sure what to order? Start with a flavour you already enjoy, then decide whether you fancy chewy pearls or little bursts of fruit flavour. You don’t need to learn the whole menu before your first sip.
Here’s a quick guide to what’s in the drink, how the toppings differ and where to start with Tempo’s fruit bubble tea.
What is bubble tea?
Bubble tea is a drink that originated in Taiwan, usually made with a tea base and toppings such as tapioca pearls. It’s often served cold with a wide straw so you can enjoy the drink and its toppings together.
You’ll often come across two styles: milk tea and fruit tea. Milk tea has a creamy character, while fruit tea puts flavours such as strawberry, mango or grape at the centre. The topping adds another choice: something to chew, something that pops, or another texture altogether.
At Tempo, we focus on fruit tea with popping boba. If fruit flavours sound more like your thing, that’s the side of the menu we’ll explore here.
Tapioca pearls or popping boba: what’s the difference?
Tapioca pearls are made from tapioca starch and have a chewy texture. Think of them as the part of the drink you pause to chew.
Popping boba have a thin outer layer and a liquid centre that bursts when you bite it. They bring a second flavour to the drink, so strawberry tea can come with mango boba, for example.
Neither is the right or wrong way to start. If you’re curious about a chewy topping, try tapioca. If little bursts of fruit flavour appeal more, try popping boba. Tempo’s Fruity Fun cans use popping boba.
How to choose your first fruit bubble tea
Choose the tea flavour first, then look at the boba pairing. You’re choosing a combination, rather than just the name on the front.
Love mango? Compare Mango with passionfruit boba and Mangoberry with blueberry boba. Prefer strawberry? Start with Strawberry and mango boba, or try the mango and strawberry combination in Mangoberry.
Here’s how the five flavours in Tempo’s Fruity Fun Mixed Pack pair up.
-
Strawberry: Strawberry tea with mango popping boba.
-
Blue Grape: Blue grape tea with lychee popping boba.
-
Mixed Berry: Mixed berry tea with blueberry popping boba.
-
Mango: Mango tea with passionfruit popping boba.
-
Mangoberry: Mango and strawberry tea with blueberry popping boba.
If you’re still torn, choose two combinations you’re curious about rather than trying to work out the “best” flavour. Your favourite might be the tea itself, the boba, or the way they taste together.
Trying a mixed pack? Make it a little tasting
A mixed pack gives you a way to compare flavours without ordering five cans of the same one. Tempo’s Fruity Fun Mixed Pack contains five 500ml cans, one of each combination above, with five bamboo fibre straws and a serving guide.
You can try them over time or turn it into something to do when friends come round. For a shared tasting, use separate glasses and stir each poured sample gently so the boba is spread between them.
-
Try the tea on its own first.
-
Then try a boba pearl and notice the second flavour.
-
Try both together and decide which combination you’d choose again.
Keep it simple: “my favourite”, “would have again” or “not for me”. You don’t need tasting vocabulary, and everyone is allowed a different winner.
How to enjoy your first Tempo can
Keep your cans in the fridge and serve chilled. Gently shake before opening, then use one of the wide straws to enjoy the tea and popping boba together. You can also pour your drink into a glass over ice.
For maximum freshness, we recommend storing your cans in the fridge. If refrigeration is unavailable, keep unopened cans in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, refrigerate and consume within three days. Follow the best before date on the card supplied with your order.
Prefer to mix your own? No brewing needed
There are two different ways to enjoy Tempo at home. Our cans are ready to drink, with the tea and boba already together. Our tea concentrates are for mixing your own drink.
Tempo tea concentrate mixes straight into water. You don’t need to brew or steep it. Follow the mixing directions on your bottle, stir, then add ice and your chosen popping boba if you like.
If you enjoy putting your own combinations together, explore our tea concentrates. If you’d rather open a can and get straight to trying the flavours, start with the mixed pack.
A few first sip questions
Do you eat the boba?
Yes. The pearls are an edible part of the drink. Tapioca pearls are chewy; popping boba burst when you bite them.
Does the tea have to match the boba flavour?
No. Mixing flavours is part of the fun. In the Fruity Fun pack, for example, Blue Grape tea comes with lychee popping boba.
Is popping boba the same as tapioca?
No. They have different textures and are made differently. If you’re expecting a chewy pearl, look for tapioca. Tempo’s Fruity Fun cans contain popping boba.
